William H. Tipton (1850–1929) was one of the most prominent, prolific, and influential battlefield photographers in the history of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Born and raised locally, he spent over six decades capturing the evolving physical and cultural landscape of the Gettysburg Battlefield. Began studying photography at age 12 under the local Tyson Brothers, who were among the town's earliest photographers.

This cabinet card photograph, mounted to a brilliant green and burgundy card with gold commercial text, showcases the monument to the beloved “Orange Blossoms” – otherwise known as the 124^th New York Volunteer Infantry.  Perched atop and featured in the white inventory label transferred from the negative is Colonel Augustus Van Horne Ellis, the respected commander who was killed in action nearby. Interestingly, reward signs are secured to a tree in the background offering money to anyone who can assist in the arrest of vandals targeting the battlefield monuments erected by a specific commercial company.

The card shows mild corner wear of the outer paper layers at front.  The gold Tipton commercial text is still brilliant and the green face retains the majority of its burgundy edge trim. The reverse is blank and shows only some mild discoloration.  Minor wear is noted at the reverse top right corner and an old, penciled retail price is written in the low right corner. Dimensions are 5.25” x 8.5”.

An important and exciting piece for the Orange Blossom enthusiast or any collector of fine Gettysburg or Civil War photography.    [cm][ph:L]
