Offered is a rare Mumper and Co. cabinet card photograph of Cowan's Battery, officially known as the 1st New York Independent Battery - a crucial Union light artillery unit famous for its heroic actions during Pickett's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg. Commanded by Captain Andrew Cowan, the unit earned lasting fame on July 3, 1863, when it fired "double canister at ten yards" to repulse advancing Confederate infantry at the “High Water Mark”.
The image is mounted to a plain card in good condition. Minor staining is noted at the low left corner, with a miniscule spot of wear at the upper right corner of the image. The edges are finished with gold gilt and show little wear. The reverse is largely blank with a Mumper and Co. commercial stamp, an old penciled retail price, and a period inked “On Hancock Ave.” near the top/right side edge. Minor edge discoloration of the reverse face is noted. Overall condition is good and the presentation of the piece is still quite striking. Dimensions are 5.2” x 8.5”.
L. Mumper & Co. was a prominent 19th-century photography studio in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, founded by Civil War veteran and historic battlefield photographer Levi Mumper (1843–1916). The company specialized in portraiture, stereoviews, and landscape photography of the Gettysburg National Military Park. After serving in Company I of the 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, Levi Mumper learned landscape photography from the Tyson brothers. He went professional in 1864 by purchasing Samuel Weaver's studio on West Middle Street.
An iconic and rare image of the US Battery at the center of it all – ideal for the early battlefield or fine Civil War image collector. [cm][ph:L]
