This important earlier photograph, taken by William Tipton, shows the monument to the 40th New York Infantry near Gettysburg’s Devil’s Den.  The monument to the 40th New York Infantry Regiment at Gettysburg is located south of Devil's Den near Crawford Avenue and Warren Avenue, was dedicated on July 2, 1888, and honors the "Mozart Regiment" for its fierce defense in the Valley of Death. A white text label was transferred from the negative, denoting the inventory number and title at low right. The image is mounted to an emerald green card with burgundy edge trim. Minor corner wear is noted at each, and minor edge wear is noted primarily at right and left. Neither meaningfully detract from the nice presentation.  The reverse is emerald green and clean, save for a few areas of minor edge rolling and a spot of layer loss from previous tape removal. Dimensions are 5.2” x 8.4”.

William Henry Tipton was a prominent American photographer who became universally known as "The Battlefield Photographer" for his extensive documentation of the Gettysburg Battlefield. Born and raised in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, he began a photography apprenticeship at just 12 years old under early local photographers Charles and Isaac Tyson. He witnessed the fierce July 1863 battle firsthand, later assisting his mentors and reportedly assisted legendary photographer Mathew Brady in capturing the historic, somber aftermath of the conflict. Recognizing the massive public interest in the battlefield, Tipton became a visionary pioneer of historic tourism. In 1893, he developed Tipton Park near the famous Devil's Den landmark. The commercial park featured a dedicated portrait studio and a restaurant catering directly to the waves of tourists and traveling veterans. He also aggressively promoted the construction of the Gettysburg Electric Railway to make touring the vast fields easier for the public.

An interesting view of one of Gettysburg’s more prominent monuments and battlefield settings – ideal for the Gettysburg or Civil War image collector.    [cm][ph:L]
