This image, captured by famed local photographer William Tipton, shows the Arion Liedertafel German Singing Society of the Bronx posing at the base of the General Hancock equestrian monument on East Cemetery Hill. A small notation on the negative identifies the photo subject as the society - along with famous early battlefield guide, Captain J. T. Long - while another gives credit to Tipton’s photo studio.
The image is mounted to a dark gray card with edge wear as shown. A crease is noted at the low right corner. The image itself shows only mild surface dirt and foxing. Reverse side is the same color but blank, with comparatively less wear than the front. Dimensions are 14” x 18”. Frame measures 22" x 18".
A very specific subject from one of Gettysburg’s most prominent early photographers – an ideal piece for the fine image or Gettysburg collector. [cm][PH:L]
