Offered is a rare, large format photo card produced by famed photographer William Tipton. The image, mounted to a card/board measuring 13.9” x 17”, features the monument to General Buford and the guns of Calef’s Battery, located along McPherson’s Ridge at Gettysburg. The image shows some foxing and chipping of the card, primarily at the corners, is noted. The reverse shows some staining and two spots of adhesive damage. The center features a complete Tipton studio label with an interpretation of the figure from the 9th New York Cavalry monument.
The Buford monument, erected in 1892 and dedicated in 1895, features a 9-foot bronze statue of Union Brigadier General John Buford looking westward, holding binoculars to watch the advancing Confederate lines. At the base of the granite pedestal sit four actual 3-inch Ordnance Rifles from Calef's Battery (Battery A, 2nd U.S. Artillery). The barrel positioned on the front-left (facing down Chambersburg Pike) is the historic weapon that fired the first Union artillery shot of the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. This specific gun tube is No. 233. After the Civil War, Captain John Calef successfully tracked the barrel down using its production serial number to ensure it was placed at this exact location.
Henry Tipton (August 5, 1850 – September 20, 1929) was one of the most prolific and prominent local photographers of the Gettysburg battlefield. Born in Gettysburg, he spent his entire life documenting the town, the aftermath of the July 1863 battle, and the subsequent transformation of the battlefield into a national memorial park. Today, his staggering collection of thousands of battlefield views and over 100,000 portraits serve as an essential historical record.
A gem for the collector of fine Civil War or Gettysburg photography. [cm][PH:L]
