William Henry Tipton (1850–1929) was a visionary entrepreneur and one of America’s most famous landscape and portrait photographers, best known for capturing the changing landscape of the Gettysburg Battlefield. Living in Gettysburg during the historic July 1863 battle, Tipton began his career as a young apprentice and grew to document the decades of veteran reunions, monument installations, and changing terrain that followed the Civil War. His massive collection of over 5,000 battlefield images serves as a foundational resource for modern historians.

This image features the unmistakable boulders of Devil’s Den.  Stylistically and thematically, the photo fits those taken by Tipton in the 1880’s into the 1890’s. The image is mounted to a green card with gold commercial writing and edge gilt.  Minor wear at the edges and corners is shown. The reverse is blank, save for an old, penciled label reading, “Devil’s Den – Gettysburg Pa” and an old inventory number. Dimensions are 4.2” x 6.5”.
