This Pattern 1826 Breast Plate was recovered on December 27, 1970, in what then was described as the woodlot across from the General John Sedgwick Equestrian Monument. Today, the cleared area is popularly known by its property name as Munshower Knoll. The ground was primarily traversed and occupied by troops of the 3rd, 5th, and 6th Corps. US counterattacks originated from this point before sweeping into the Valley of Death to stabilize the left flank of the army.
The plate shows a fair amount of oxidation and dirt, with areas of bare surface along the outer border. Lead fill has oxidized to a shade of white. Mounting loops are no longer present, but the bases remain fixed in the lead fill.
This relic is part of the Iva Rosensteel-Rider collection. Mrs. Rider was the sister of George Rosensteel, who started the Electric Map museum in Gettysburg. Eventually, it became a part of the Rider collection in Gettysburg.
A very neat relic from a popular and important Gettysburg Battlefield location with impeccable provenance. [cm][ph:L]
