This is a U.S. Pattern 1839 oval cartridge box plate that was recovered in the summer of 1970 on the McGlaughlin property along Taneytown Road, in the woods behind the New Jersey Brigade monument. It was found cut in half and is displayed in two pieces. The plate is stamped brass with the raised "US" in a beaded oval border, and the letters are still readable across both halves.

The reverse keeps its original lead filling, which has developed a white oxidized surface from long burial. One of the two iron attachment loops is still in place. A rust stain on the other half marks where the second loop was. The collector's paper tag on the back is inscribed "1970 / No. 13." This matches the plate's entry as #13 in the collection's red logbook.

The Pattern 1839 plate was the standard ornament on the U.S. infantry cartridge box flap through the Civil War. It also served as a counterweight to keep the flap closed. During July 2 and 3, 1863, the ground along Taneytown Road lay directly behind the Union line on Cemetery Ridge. It was crowded with reserve troops, ammunition trains and field hospitals.

This plate comes from the Rosensteel–Rider Collection. The collection began with relics gathered after the battle by siblings John, George and Iva Rosensteel, who grew up in Gettysburg along Taneytown Road. The family kept collecting through later generations. Maryann Rosensteel (now Rider), Iva's granddaughter, began collecting early in life, and this piece comes from her collection. The plate is housed in a black display case with a printed identification label and a Rosensteel–Rider Collection provenance label on the reverse.

The plate is in two pieces, cut through the center. The front has an even dug patina with surface wear, and the "US" is visible. The lead backing shows white oxidation and some losses along the cut edge. One iron loop is present but rusted. The other loop is missing.   [cm][ph:L]
