Offered here is a War Department Form No. 27, "List of Quartermaster's Stores, &c.," recording a large transfer of wagons, horses, and harness at Frederick, Maryland, on July 7, 1863, just four days after the close of the Battle of Gettysburg, as the Army of the Potomac moved south through Maryland in pursuit of Lee's retreating army.
The document records stores transferred by Capt. M. I. Ludington, Assistant Quartermaster, to Capt. P. P. Pitkin, Assistant Quartermaster, at Frederick. Listed are:
7 U.S. Wagons – Worn
29 Horses – Unserviceable
14 Sets Wheel Harness – Worn
14 Sets Lead Harness – Worn
7 Sets Four-Horse Reins – Worn
12 Neck Straps & Chains – Worn
The certification at the foot of the form is signed by Ludington as "Capt. & Asst. Quartermaster, 3d Div. 2d A.C." The Third Division of the Second Corps, under Gen. Alexander Hays, held the line on Cemetery Ridge at Gettysburg and helped repulse Pickett's Charge on July 3. Twenty-nine unserviceable horses and seven worn-out wagons with their harness, turned in just days late, speak plainly to the toll the campaign took on the division's transport.
Marshall I. Ludington went on to a long Army career and served as Quartermaster General of the United States Army, making this an especially desirable signature on a Gettysburg Campaign document.
The reverse is docketed "No. 194, Abstract E, July Qr. 1863, List of Stores Received from Capt. M. I. Ludington, Asst. Quartermaster U.S. Army, at Frederick, Md."
Condition: Folio sheet with original fold lines. Even toning, with chipping and some paper loss along one edge, not affecting the important content. Handwriting is clear and legible. A superb horse-related Gettysburg Campaign document tied to a hard-fighting Second Corps division. [cm][ph:L]
