Offered here is a War Department Form No. 27, "List of Quartermaster's Stores, &c.," recording the transfer of army animals at Frederick, Maryland, on July 9, 1863, six days after the close of the Battle of Gettysburg, as the Army of the Potomac pushed south through Maryland in pursuit of Lee's retreating army.

The document records stores transferred by Capt. S. M. Wells, Assistant Quartermaster, U.S. Army, to Capt. P. P. Pitkin, Assistant Quartermaster, at Frederick. Listed are seven horses and one mule, all noted as "Worn" in the condition column. The certification at the foot of the form is signed by Wells as Captain and A.Q.M.

Frederick served as a key supply hub for the Union army in the days after Gettysburg, and worn-out animals were turned in there by the hundreds after the hard marching and fighting of the campaign. This simple list of seven used-up horses and a single mule captures that moment well.

The reverse is docketed "No. 71, Abstract E, July Qr. 1863, List of Stores Received from Capt. S. M. Wells, Asst. Quartermaster U.S. Army, at Frederick, Md."

Condition: Folio sheet with original fold lines. Light toning, minor edge wear, and a few small spots. Handwriting is clear and fully legible.

A great horse-related Gettysburg Campaign document.   [cm][ph:L]
