Offered here is a War Department Form No. 27, "List of Quartermaster's Stores, &c.," documenting the transfer of a horse-drawn wagon team at Frederick City, Maryland, on July 8, 1863, just five days after the close of the Battle of Gettysburg, as the Army of the Potomac moved south through Maryland in pursuit of Lee's retreating army.
The document records the stores turned over by Lieut. S. B. Taylor, acting quartermaster of the 107th New York Volunteers, to Captain Pitkin. Listed in Taylor's hand are four horses, one wagon, one wagon cover, two sets of harness, and one whip, with their condition noted as "Serviceable" and "Worn." Several entries have been corrected in period ink, including a set of wagon bows struck from the list. The certification at the foot of the form is signed by Taylor as "Lieut. & Act. Regt. Quartermaster, 107th N.Y."
The 107th New York served in the Twelfth Corps and was engaged at Culp's Hill at Gettysburg. A list of worn and serviceable horses and harness handed over in the days immediately after the battle is a vivid reminder of the hard use the army's animals and transport saw during the campaign, and of the enormous logistical effort that kept the Army of the Potomac moving.
The reverse is docketed "No. 211, Abstract E, July Qr. 1863, List of Stores Received from Lieut. S. B. Taylor, Act. Quartermaster U.S. Army, at Frederick, Md.," with "Lt S B Taylor" written at the top.
Condition: Large folio sheet with original fold lines. Light toning and scattered spotting, with a few small chips and fold separations along the edges. Handwriting is clear and fully legible.
A great horse-related Gettysburg Campaign document from a New York regiment. [cm][ph:L]
