Empty letter envelope. Plain letter envelope with cancelled Jeff Davis postage stamp.  A blue, ten-cent Jefferson Davis stamp is pasted in upper right corner. The stamp has February Richmond cancellation.

Envelope is thinly addressed in ink to “Dr. B.H. Hoyt / Wheaton’s Divission / Forstberg’s [Forsberg’s] Brigade / Early’s A.V.D”.  Barzilla H. Hoyt was a surgeon in the 45^th Virginia Infantry late in the war. The 45^th served mostly in Western Virginia and in the Valley towards the end of the war.
