Inside front cover has a period ink inscription of “JOHN E. BEAN” above “TO A. B. WOLFF” in heavy pencil.

The 1860 Census shows a John E. Bean living in Seneca, New York who was a practicing lawyer but nothing more is known of him. Since he lived 40 or so miles from where Abraham Wolff resided perhaps there was some connection.

Abraham B. Wolff was born in Umhausen, Germany on October 30, 1833 and came to the United States in 1850. He enlisted as a private in Company D, 148th New York Infantry at Geneva on August 29, 1862. He was promoted to sergeant-major on September 14, 1862 but was reduced to ranks on August 2, 1863 and returned to Company D as a private. He was discharged for disability on August 9, 1863.

After his service Wolff was engaged in the clothing business in central New York and in 1896 he was elected to the Board of Supervisors in Rochester’s seventh ward serving two terms.

He died at age 85 on March 1, 1918 and is buried in Rochester’s Mount Hope Cemetery.  [ad][ph:L]
