Bone cup with brass rim and base was prisoner of war art made in Libby Prison. Brass rim is engraved with, “CAPT. H.C.NEWTON, 93RD REGT. N.Y. VOL. SEPT. 19TH, 1864”. Bone is engraved with, “LIBBY PRI. RICHMOND, VA”. Underside of brass base is engraved with, “IN GOD WE TRUST”. Cup measures 2 ¾” across the top x 2 ¾” high.

Cup comes with a handwritten note of verification which reads, “This cup was made by a Union soldier (prisoner) in Libby Prison from bone taken from the leg of a dead Union prisoner, and given to Col. H.C. Newton, who was also a prisoner in Libby Prison in 1863. Col. Newton gave me the cup about a month before he died in 1901. D.S. Potter”.

Cup comes in a hinged pressed paper case that is lined in blue velvet, some of which has faded. Original hooks and knobs are present. Back of case is covered in leather, which is peeling. Case measures 3 ¾” x 4”x 2”.  [sm][ph:L]
