Offered here is a 19” x 18” piece of original U.S. Army balloon cloth with artwork relating to an incident that happened in the Philippines in 1920.

This portion of thin cloth has old paper backing. Hand drawn artwork features balloons, biplane, and period insignia for the “17th / Bal. Co. / Kindley / Field”. Text on the lower portion describes the tale:

“Souvnier of the first Balloon flown in the Philippine Islands by the 17th Balloon Co. U.S. Army.  This Balloon Broke away on the 20th of Oct. 1920 at Kindley Field, Corregidor I. with the Pilot Lt. W.E. Huffman and passenger Pvt. Murray C.A.C.  The ascension of the Balloon was checked at an altitude of 8200 ft.  The Balloon was torn – while valveing the Balloon – gradually descending landed in Manila Bay 25 miles from Corregidor Island.”

Signed by “artist” in lower, right corner, “Puttcamp / Dec. 27 / 1920”.

In very good condition with only fold lines from how it was stored for years.

The 17th Balloon Company was a U.S. Army Air Service unit stationed at Kindley Field, located on Corregidor Island in the Philippines, during 1920-1922. It was part of the post-WWI era U.S. military, serving in various locations including Camp Lee and Fort Omaha before its assignment to the Philippines.    [jet] [ph:L]
