George Sumner Burnham was Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st Connecticut Volunteer Infantry at the Battle of Bull Run. The Regiment formed in the earliest days of the war for three months service. It performed well in the Battle of Bull Run and maintained its discipline during the retreat. It even stayed on past the end of its enlistment packing up the camps and saving the equipment of other regiments. The 1st Connecticut lost 6 men wounded, 6 men captured and 25 men discharged for disability during the Civil War. Later in 1862 Burnham served with the 22nd Connecticut Infantry and ended the war in the US Volunteers Quartermaster's Department

This fine example of a Confederate type of haversack was brought back home by Lt. Col. George Sumner Burnham, after his time in the Army, and most likely picked up by him in July of 1861 at the Battle of Bull Run. This haversack came from an old collection in upstate New York and is accompanied by two narratives, one handwritten and one typed, describing the provenance of the haversack. The haversack with a width of 14 inches and a height of 12 inches is constructed of light gauge, tarred or black painted linen and lined, in the main body interior, with a fine blue satinette; the smaller front pouch is lined in an off-white linen. The bag is in very good condition, evidencing some field use and resultant wear, with a tear near where one end of the shoulder strap attached. The shoulder strap is 95% missing but two 3-inch-long russet leather loops are extant on the rear of the knapsack and a roller buckle in the front is firmly attached but the closure strap is 99% missing. It is all hand stitched. This is a hard-to-find piece of equipment.  [pe][ph:L]
