Identified Civil War Ames Model 1840 artillery saber in very good condition. Made for artillery mounted units, this edged weapon is stamped on the obverse ricasso of the blade with a clear stamping “U.S. / L.D / 1862” in block format while the reverse ricasso has a weak Ames, Chicopee, Mass maker’s stamp. This saber has a 32¼” long, curved, single edged steel blade with a flat top, and a single wide fuller. Blade is very good but has a dark gray, mottled patina. Blade’s true edge in excellent shape, no nicks. Original leather washer pad is strong and intact.

Entire brass hilt, including the pommel has acquired a rich bronze patina. Original grips and wire twist are strong and tight. Brass knuckle guard has “BUGLER  J.B. WALLACE, CO. D” stamped in clearly.

The iron scabbard exhibits a dark appearance. No visible stampings on drag. The large, iron mounts are tight and hold the two sword rings. Scabbard collar and throat are tight.  Scabbard is in very good condition.

John B. Wallace, born in Jefferson County, OH and a cooper by trade, was 26 years old when he enlisted at Wheeling, WV on August 31, 1862. Appointed as Bugler and mustered in to Battery D, 1^st WV Light Artillery. Wallace was absent at the US General Hospital at Parkersburg, WV in October 1862 due to dysentery. Muster rolls show him as being on detached service at Petersburg in December 1862, and again in January 1863; he was otherwise listed as ‘Present’ with his regiment throughout his term of service. Mustered out 6/27/65 at Wheeling. Wallace died in Ohio on May 24, 1923.

Battery D was organized August 19, 1862, with John Carlin, captain ; Ephraim Chalfant, first lieutenant, and J. Melvin Richards, second lieutenant. Having served in West Virginia, in May 9, 1863, it is stationed at Winchester, Va. ; in January 1863, in Schenck's Eighth Army Corps, Milroy's .brigade, at Winchester, and during the historical defense of that place by Milroy, June 13 to Is, when it rendered conspicuous service.

August 18, Captain Carlin and battery are at Wheeling, W. Va.; August 31, 1863, in Mulligan's brigade at New Creek; December 31, 1863, in Thoburn's brigade at New Creek; January and February at New Creek; April 4, 1864, still in Thoburn's brigade, Sigel's department; April 9, 1864, by order of General Sigel the battery was assigned to the command of General Sullivan; also on the same date Captain Carlin was assigned to the staff of Major-General Sigel as chief of artillery, and acting chief of ordnance. May 15, 1864, in Colonel Wynkoop's brigade at New Market. August 5, at Piedmont, under General Hunter; June 10 to 23, in Capt. H. A. Dupont's artillery brigade, on Hunter's Lynchburg campaign. July 31, still with General Hunter. August 8, battery ordered from Parkersburg and Wheeling to recruit its numbers and to refit with new guns. September 13, 1864, Captain Carlin received orders at Wheeling to proceed with his command to Parkersburg, and take charge of fortifications at that post; to report to Colonel Wilkinson, where it remained until mustered out, June 27, 1865.   [JET/LD] [ph:L]
