This sword was sold as part of the complete Civil War uniform group of Lt. George Brown Eckert, 3rd US Infantry, through Heritage Auctions in 2013 (see pics from auction #6098 /lot #32159). At some latter point, this sword and a pair of previously sold leather boots (Horse Soldier inventory #1268-1019) were separated from the rest of the group.
The sword is a Frederic Horster, Solingen, Germany product. Marked F HORSTER / SOLIGEN” on one ricasso and the “PROVED” brass inlaid disk on the other. The blade is 32 ½” with a 39” overall length. The blade retains most of the bright shiny polish with some scattered spots of darkening, mostly near the grip end. A good sharp point with only one, almost un-discernable, blade nick. One small panel of etching on each side at the ricasso. The middle of the blade has two larger etched panels containing a finely executed eagle with riband on one side and fancy block letter US on the other. A perfect fitting leather pad washer remains and is mated to the scabbard throat.
The non-regulation brass hand guard is based off of the English pattern 1822 saber, with the addition of an American eagle. The riband is die stamped “E PLURIBIS UNUM” with a large cut out “US”. The brass wears a pleasing undisturbed patina with traces of gold gilting remaining in areas that were not handled. The grip is fine-grain light grey shark skin that is triple brass wire wrapped. The blade tang peen is smooth and not disturbed.
The scabbard is iron with a scattered dark/ light grey patina. The throat is brass with a three-step decoration and secured by two screws. Both rings are plain brass showing light wear around the holes. The drag is also plain brass with a few light dings and scratches. No dents in the scabbard.
Lt. Eckert was from Reading, PA. Eckert mustered into the 3rd Infantry on 8/5/61 as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant on 3/12/62, serving with the regiment until May 1863. During his term of service, the regiment was engaged in the Peninsula Campaign, The Seven Days, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville.
