The first sword is a Model 1860 Cavalry Sabre by the firm of J.E. Bleckmann, founded in Solingen in 1808. The sabre has its scabbard and is in good condition. The leather on the grip is missing and the wire is also missing. The blade is also marked with the firms distinctive BM & symbol. The second sword is Dalton’s Veteran’s Grand Army of the Republic sword.
The swords are mounted on a wooden shield with two silver plaques. The first plaque lists 10 battles he was in. The second plaque shows the dates of his enlistment and advancements.
Dalton was 22 years old when he was commissioned a 1st Lt. in the 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery on Feb. 10, 1862. He was discharged for promotion on May 28, 1862 to accept a commission in the US Volunteers Adjutant General’s Department as Captain and Assistant Adjutant General. He attained the rank of Major on June 30, 1864 and was discharged on Nov. 25, 1864. Dalton resided in Boston after the war, where he was a wealthy insurance broker. He died in 1914 and is buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Middlesex County. We include in the photos above is a scan, front and back, of a CDV of Dalton from a 2010 online auction listing (does not accompany the swords).
An interesting note on issuance of Bleckmann’s sabres was discovered in John Thillmann’s book Civil War Cavalry and Artillery Sabers. In his book he illustrates another Bleckmann Cavalry Sabre that was issued to an officer in the 3rd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. [ws] [ph:L]
