This is a top-shelf example of the regulation U.S. Model 1850 Staff and Field Officer’s Sword by the premier Ames Manufacturing Company. Preserving lots of the original bright, gold gilt finish on the brass hilt and scabbard mounts, vivid blade etching, and superb brown lacquered iron scabbard body. The sword is fully complete, down to the original white buff leather throat pad. The hilt shows very light wear to the high points gilt, with most being on the right and left edges of the guard. The exposed worn areas have toned to a pleasing mixture of darker oxidized brass. The gray sharkskin grip wrap and wire binding are perfect. The seam showing an example of the small verse’s large nodule fish skin combination. The blade pad is present on the underside of the guard and shows a perfect match.

The blade has perfect edges and point, with no nicks present. The bright frosted blade shows about 75% of original polish with, just a few minimal dark spots towards the guard. The etching, ending in arrowhead terminal, foliate patriotic motifs, and all within frosted panels. Both sides use long sequences of loose meandering scrolls at top and bottom to set off the central patriotic motifs. The obverse uses an eagle, set lengthwise, on the blade at center, with wings extended. Above that the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” set in a ribbon scroll, running just beneath it. On the reverse, the same style scrolls frame a block letter “U.S.” in the center of the frosted panel. Ames is listed as utilizing the block letters early war to 1862. With the slant script styling being after. The ricasso is maker etched “Ames Mfg Co / Chicopee / Mass”.

The scabbard mounts have rich bright gold gilt as well, and the reverse of the upper mount is clearly stamped, “AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE / MASS” lengthwise between the ring band and throat. The mounts show minimum wear with most being associated with the sword belt clips. The middle mount having the greatest amount. The scabbard body is rigid, with no dents, strong color and surface.  We almost no of wear to the lacquered finish. Having a very slight scratch in a few obscure locations. The drag having a scattered amount of very small dings and scratches. Just enough to know that someone was carrying the sword. The entire overall length of the sword is 37 ½ inches, with the blade just over 30 inches.

This was the regulation sword for Staff and Field grade officers. This is a superb example, worthy of the top spot in a display or collection of swords. [stp] [ph:L]
