This revolver came from a collection of items belonging to brothers William and Edward Lyman of the 16^th Massachusetts. The revolver was wired to a large frame of items carried by the brothers during the Civil War. The items were removed from the frame and sold in groups. Not knowing to which brother this pistol belonged it is being sold separately.

Originally blued this revolver now has a bright metal appearance with all the bluing being gone. Surface does have some light scattered mottling. Revolver is .34 with a five-shot cylinder and a 3.00 inch octagon barrel. The barrel is strongly stamped with a number “98” on the lower right flat. This matches the number found on the cylinder, frame and triggerguard. Frame is crisply stamped “ALLEN & WHEELOCK” on the top. Frame screws show light wear.

The cylinder has all the original nipples and has a wonderful and very distinct cylinder scene of a forest with dear and dogs. Recess around each nipple is dark. Cylinder is held in place by a sliding pin. Bar hammer has a strong clear mark of “PATENET APRIL 16, 1845.” Revolver is double action and works perfectly.

Bag shaped wood grips are in very nice condition.

These revolvers were produced from about 1857 to the early 1860’s.

William Lyman was a 23 year old carpenter when he enlisted as a Private in Company K, 16th Massachusetts Infantry on July 2, 1861 in Cambridge, MA. He was present with his until through Jan. 1, 1863 at which time he was promoted to Corporal. He continued on with his Company until April 26, 1863 when he was sent to the regimental hospital and on the 28th forwarded to a general hospital. His illness was listed as “Malarial poisoning while serving in the Peninsular Campaign in May 1862.” He would not return to duty until December 10, 1863. On May 24, 1864 Lyman was reduced to the ranks and on the 31st he was back in the hospital. He returned to duty on July 2, 1864 and was mustered out on July 27, 1864 at the expiration of his term of service.

While with his regiment Lyman saw action at Fair Oaks, Oak Grove, Glendale, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Wilderness and Spotsylvania.

.After the war William Lyman returned to Watertown, Massachusetts where he married in 1870 and as far as is known had one son. He was an active member in the GAR being a member of three different Posts. The Joseph Hooker Post # 23 in east Boston, the P. Sterns Davis Post # 57 of East Cambridge and the Francis Washburn Post #92 in Brighton.

Lyman died on May 5, 1911 and is buried in Newton Cemetery, Newton, Massachusetts.

Edward Lyman was born in Massachusetts in 1840. He enlisted July 2, 1861 in Co. K of the 16th Massachusetts Infantry and was appointed Corporal on Dec. 1, 1862.

Edward was present for the fighting at Fair Oaks, Oak Grove, Glendale, 2nd Bull Run and Fredericksburg. At the Battle of Chancellorsville he was wounded in his left shoulder and died of his gunshot wounds and typhoid fever on June 7, 1863. His body was returned home and he was buried in Newton Cemetery in Newton, Massachusetts.  [ad] [ph:L]
