Here is an original, Civil War, Starr Percussion Cavalry Carbine manufactured by the Starr Arms Company of Yonkers, New York. Similar to the Sharps Carbine in appearance and function, the Starr was a .54 caliber, single shot breech loader. 20,601 were produced between 1862 and 1865. In government tests, the Starr was actually rated as better than the Sharps. A majority were issued in the western theatre; the Starr is known to have been used by the 1st Arkansas, 5th Kansas, 11th Missouri, and the 24th New York.

The First Arkansas Union Cavalry played a unique role in Civil War history. The troops, especially the enlisted men, were not Yankees but Southern Unionists. They were primarily from Northwest Arkansas and were assigned to occupy their hometown and county for two and a half years. It was a very bitter war among neighbors fighting each other as Confederate guerrillas and as Union cavalrymen. After the war the First Arkansas commander, Colonel Marcus LaRue Harrison, stayed on in Fayetteville and became its post-war mayor for a time. Please click on this link (Battle Unit Details - The Civil War (U.S. National Park Service). The 1st Arkansas is the only unit known to have officially marked their carbines. They are quite scarce and desirable. This is one of those carbines.

It is hand stamped with single letter dies on the top of the frame over the breech with the three-line marking "1" over "ARK" over "L". This indicates "L" Company of the 1st Arkansas cavalry. This carbine is in very fine condition. About 40% of the factory blued finish remains on the barrel with the remainder having turned a smooth brown. The lever has about 10% of its blue remaining. The lock and frame have about 30% of their factory cased color remaining. The lock is stamped "STARR ARMS CO." over "YONKERS N.Y." (this is also stamped on the barrel). "STARR'S PATENT." over "SEPT. 14th 1858" is on the tang of the barrel breech frame. The brass butt plate and the barrel band have a golden brass patina. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is for the most part excellent. The saddle ring is in place. The stock is in fine condition with some small dings and scratches from use but has a nice glowing patina.

A very handsome regimentally marked carbine.   [pe][ph:L]
