This bible is worn, missing its title page and the first 12 Chapters of St. Matthew. It is worn and in poor condition, condition, with its outer spine covering gone, but with tight spine signatures, and cover boards attached.

Of considerable interest great interest is the yellow label yellow—“bible House, Baltimore”—label pasted inside the front cover. Dated, Dec. 13th 1862, this label records the issuance of the bible to Henry Carr, within the following printed text:

“From the Maryland State Bible Society to Mr. Henry Carr soldier in the Company___, Reg___ vols. / Should I die on the battle field or in Hospital, for the sake of humanity, acquaint_______ residing____of the fact and where my remains may be found.”

Carr and Potter served to together in the 121st New York and with Carr’s 1863 departure the from the regiment, the bible was left behind for Potter. As a consequence, Carr’s last name has been crossed out and replaced by “Henry B. Potter”, 121st New York Infantry. Following the word “acquaint,” Potter has written “my wife Mrs. Henry B. Potter” residing “at Laurens Otsego Co., NY”--[Clark’s Mills Oneida Co. NY.] has been crossed out.

Henry Carr was an 18 year old who was mustered as a s Private into, Co. “I”, 16th New York Infantry. He was transferred to the 121st New York Infantry, 5/1//1863, after which he was mustered into Co. “G”, New York 14th Heavy artillery, 10/17/1864. In this latter regiment he was promoted to Corporal 12/17/1863 and 4/20/1864 and then to Sergeant, 10/1/1864. Later mustered out 8/26/1865.

Henry Potter was a 34 year old who was mustered as Private into Co. “I”, 121st Infantry, 8/1/11/1862. He mustered out 5/16/1865.  [jp] [ph:L]
