This piece was sold by Heritage Auctions in 2017. Their description continues to be accurate regarding content and condition. It follows below:

The votive-style tableau includes Elver's 14th Corp acorn badge and a lock of hair backed with the remnant of a flag all housed under glass in a contemporary blue velvet covered oval case. The acorn-shaped metal pin-back corps badge measures approximately 19 mm x 34 mm and is engraved "H. E. / Co. C. / 9. O.V.I." A check of the 9th Ohio's regimental roster reveals that there is only one soldier with those initials in C Company. The badge is displayed on a blue silk fragment of a flag, retaining one 2 ¼-inch gold-painted star, possibly from the regimental colors. The lock of hair is placed upon the star to complete the group.

Private Henry Elver was 19 years old when he enlisted on May 27, 1861 as a private. He mustered into C Company of the 9th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and remained with this company until he mustered out on June 7, 1864. His records show he was wounded at Chickamauga on September 19, 1863.

Condition: Excellent. The badge and flag fragment are in wonderful condition; the outer portions of the case are soiled from storage.  [sr]  [ph:L]
