Bible contains note: “A bible given to James Ray by his father John Ray as James left to fight the American Civil War in 1863.” Front eps inscription: “James Ray”, plus reverse page inscription: “Dear James / Read this book with care; and pray to God to save your soul alive. Your Father, Jas. Ray. “
A resident of Madison, WI, James Ray mustered as a private into Co. “A”, 11th Wisconsin Infantry, 3/30/1864 on 3/30/1864, and poignantly died one month later of disease, 4/30/1864, at age 17. He is buried in Arena, WI.
