Marbled boards cover this war-era volume that was printed in Richmond by William F. Ritchie in 1862.

Book contains four components. First section of book is titled, “PUBLIC OR GENERAL ACTS” and contains 182 pages. Second section is titled, “ACTS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF VIRGINIA, PASSED AT EXTRA SESSION, 1862, IN THE EIGHTY-SIXTH YEAR OF THE COMMONWEALTH” and contains 34 pages. Third section is “ORDINANCES ADOPTED BY THE CONVENTION OF VIRGINIA AT THE ADVANCED SESSION IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER 1861” and contains 11 pages. Lastly is “THE CONSTITUTION OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA ADOPTED MARCH 11, 1861” which contains 16 pages.

This volume measures 5 ½” x 9” x ¾”. Shows light wear and distressing all over, with more on edges. Binding is tight with no loose pages. Pages have yellowed with age and have light spotting. No tears, just first few pages have bent top corners.

Title page is signed at the top right, “WM. W. OLD 1877”. William W. Old enlisted as a private (date unknown). On 8/15/1862 he was commissioned into Battery 9th Virginia. He was discharged for promotion on 5/15/1863 and was commissioned into Co. “B”, CS Quartermaster's Dept. He was listed as wounded 6/1/1862 at Seven Pines, VA. He was promoted to Captain on 8/15/1862 (As of Battery #9 Richmond Defenses). He also had service in 14th VA Infantry. Old served on staffs of Gen. Bushrod, Johnson and Gen. Jubal Early.  Postwar he worked as a lawyer in Norfolk, VA. Died on 7/19/1911 in Norfolk at the age 70. Records on Old accompany book.

Confederate books printed in Richmond during the war such as this volume are highly collectible.  [sl][ph:L]
