This unique and very interesting piece is a soldier-made smoking pipe. Measuring 8” long with a 3.5” tall bowl, what jumps out is a highly detailed alligator atop the stem. Made by a soldier very skilled with his pocket knife. Finely cut into the bowl is “I.M. TOOLE / CO. G 6 / FL.”
There is some light charring inside the bowl at the bottom, and there are several open and closed cracks as should be expected from old, dried wood. Overall, however the condition is excellent.
Isaac Monroe Toole was born in Early County, Georgia in 1842. Enlisted on 3/11/1862 at Apalachicola, Florida as a Corporal in Company G, 6th Florida Infantry. Promoted to Sergeant is early 1863. Wounded 9/19/1863 at Chickamauga. Captured 12/17/1864 at Franklin. Confined at Louisville; moved to Camp Chase, OH on 1/5/1865; took Oath Allegiance 6/12/1865 and released. Married Elizabeth Cooper on 09/10/1865. Died 11/10/1912 and buried in Jackson County, Florida.
This is a very interesting and eye-catching item…AND from a Confederate Florida regiment! [jet] [ph:L]
