This is a simple leather wallet typical of what most Civil War soldiers would have carried. The wallet measures approximately 4” wide, 10.5” long (plus additional 6” closing strap) that, when folded up comes down to 4” x 2.75”. The piece features several internal flaps and pockets designed to secure money and other personal treasures. All seams remain securely stitched and the leather remains soft and supple. The portion forming the exterior (when folded) exhibits a dark surface from rubbing while in the pocket.
One of the internal pocket flaps is marked in period ink, “L.B.Grier May[??] / 24 Ga. Inf[???]”.
Lemuel B. Grier was from Hall County, Georgia and was 19 years old when he enlisted as a Private into Company “I” [Glade Guards Volunteer Rifles] of the 24th Georgia Infantry in February 1862. The 24th Georgia fought with the Army of Northern Virginia throughout the war. His incomplete records show him returning to duty from Chimborazo Hospital on June 27, 1862 and in October 1862, being sent into General Hospital No. 21 at Richmond. The only other records list him as killed on 8/16/1864 at Deep Bottom Run, Virginia.
A great, identified personal item from the Texas Civil War Museum collection. [jet][ph:L]
