“WAR OF 1861” EAGLE IDENTIFICATION DISK – 9TH NEW HAMPSHIRE INFANTRY

$895.00 ON HOLD

Quantity Available: 1

Item Code: 1268-125

A very fine example of a Civil War “War of 1861” Eagle pattern identification disk. These were private purchase items bought by the soldiers themselves; they were not government issued like “dog tags” of later wars.

This is a brass, 1” round disk with gold wash. One side features raised “WAR OF 1861 / UNITED STATES” surrounding a spread-winged eagle. The other side is hand stamped “N. NICKOLS / CO. C / 9TH / REGT. / N.H. VOLS. / MERRIDETH.”

Nathaniel Nichols (1833-1864) was from Meredith, NH, and was 29 years old when he enlisted on 7/25/1862 as a Private in Company C, of the 9th New Hampshire Infantry. As part of the 9th Army Corps he fought at South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Vicksburg. He died of disease on 3/23/1864 at Camp Nelson, KY. He is buried at Camp Nelson National Cemetery, Nicholasville, Kentucky.

Disk is in very fine condition with the brass showing a mellow tone and retaining some gold wash surrounding raised areas. From the Texas Civil War Museum collection.  [jet][ph:L]
