IDENTIFIED SILVER 15TH CORPS BADGE, 1ST ILLINOIS LIGHT ARTILLERY – ALEXANDER “AXEL” LINDMAN

$1,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1268-142

Badge is made of a recycled piece of silver, measures approximately 2.14” across, features a cartridge box attached to the front, and had a complete “t-bar” pin on the back.

The design of the badge is a diamond-shaped base with a raised cartridge box at center. The box appears to be browned tin and has a silver “US” box plate mounted on the front. The silver base had been recycled as there is a portion of engraved floral design remaining on the backside.

A fine decorative edge was put on the front side and finely engraved above and below the cartridge box is, “Axel Lindman / Co. H, 1st Ill. Light Arty.”

The item is in very good condition. The whole badge shows a nice light silver tarnish. The original pin and clasp remain in place on the back.

Alexander Lindman was born in Sweden and ended up in Illinois. He was an 18-year-old Laborer when he enlisted on 1/20/1862 at Moline, IL as a Private in Battery “H” of the 1st Illinois Light Artillery. He re-enlisted on 2/28/1864 and was Mustered Out on 6/14/1865 at Springfield, IL. In 1926 he went to the National Soldier’s Home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he died a year later.

The 15th Army Corps served in the Army of the Tennessee. It was commanded by Sherman in the Siege of Vicksburg and then by Major General John A. Logan in Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. Brigadier General Peter J. Osterhaus commanded the Corps in the March to the Sea, but Logan was back in command during Sherman's Carolina Campaign. When General Howard became head of the Freedman's Bureau, Logan became the commander of the Army of the Tennessee for the final march to Washington. William Hazen then became the 15th Corps final commander. [jet][ph:L]
