This item is a soldier’s identification disk made from a silver Seated Liberty Quarter.
The face was polished smooth and then finely engraved with initials “AS” at top with a large “B” in center, and “17 Iowa Inft” at the bottom; olive branches adorn the upper edges. The reverse retains all the details of the original coin with the eagle, the US motto, and remnants of a mint mark. The base of the hinge and the clasp is all that remains of the t-bar style pin.
Anton Schen is the only soldier with the initials “AS” in Company “B” of the 17th Iowa. He was from Nauvoo, Illinois and was 31 years old when he enlisted as a Private on 3/7/1862. He re-enlisted on 4/22/1864 and was Mustered Out on 7/25/1865 at Louisville, KY.
The 17th Iowa mustered 958 men at the time it left Iowa for active campaigning. The regiment was engaged in all major battles with the Army of the Tennessee. It suffered 5 officers and 66 enlisted men who were killed in action or who died of their wounds and 2 officers and 121 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 194 fatalities.
A very nice ID tag from the Texas Civil War Museum collection. [jet][ph:L]
