Offered here is a hand carved identification piece. Made of a sliver of animal bone, this measures 1.25” x 1.5” with “stepped” edges. There is a hole drilled at top to suspend from a pin of perhaps a cord around the neck. There is a portion at the bottom that has broken away, which luckily does not affect the inscriptions on either side.

One side has, “174th / REG. PA. / JULY. 4th / 1863” cut into the surface, with characters filled with red and blue dye. The opposite side features “[triangle] / WM. / BRIERLEY / CO. A.” also done in red and blue. Bone material has a smooth finish with yellow-ish/light tan tones.

William Bryerly, from Bucks County, PA, enlisted on 10/29/1862 as a Private in Company “A” of the 174th PA. Infantry, a nine-month regiment. They served most of their time in South Carolina. He was Mustered Out on 8/7/1863 at Philadelphia, PA.

A very nice “home-made” ID tag. From the Texas Civil War Museum collection.  [jet][ph:L]
