Offered here is a gold identification badge with t-bar pin on back. Badge is in shield shaped and engraved with “CAPT / C.H. SMALL / Co. D / 5th Me Vol.” Badge is complete and very fine in every aspect. Measures 0.95” tall x 0.83” across.
Charles H. Small was from Topsham, Maine and was 32 years old when he enlisted on 6/24/1861 as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company “D” of the 5th Maine Infantry. Promoted to Captain on 10/7/1861. He was Mustered Out on 7/27/1864.
During its three years of service, the 5th Maine was engaged in many severe battles including First Bull Run, West Point, Gaines' Mill, Charles City Cross-Roads, Crampton's Gap, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Salem Heights, Gettysburg, Rappahannock Station, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, and Cold Harbor.
