Christian Harriot enlisted on 3/30/1862 at San Francisco, CA as a Private and mustered into Company M of the 2nd California Cavalry. He was promoted several times, first to Sergeant Major on 9/20/1862, Quartermaster Sergeant on 1/17/1863, 1st Lieutenant (Quartermaster) on 5/11/1863, and 1st Lieutenant on 2/1/1863. The 2nd Regiment California Volunteer Cavalry was raised in response to President Lincoln's second call for troops in August 1861. By October 30, 1861, the regiment was organized and mustered into the service. The companies were assembled at Camp Alert in San Francisco. After completing the organization of the regiment, and a short period for drill and discipline, the regiment was sent, by companies, to various posts within the Department of the Pacific. The regiment was mustered out in March, 1866, although some companies remained in service beyond that date.
According to the regimental history, “Company "M" – was ordered to Carson City, Nev., May, 1862 and marched via Fort Churchill and Ruby Valley to Utah to protect Overland mail route July to September, 1862. Expedition from Fort Ruby to Camp Douglass, Utah, September 30 - October 29. Expedition from Camp Douglass to Cache Valley November 20-27, 1862. Cache Valley November 23. Engagement on Bear River January 29, 1863. Expedition from Camp Douglass to Spanish Fork April 2-6. Action at Spanish Fork Canon April 4. Duty at Camp Douglass, Fort Bridger and Camp Connor till May, 1865. Dean Man's Fork, Dakota, June 17. On Powder River Expedition July to September and garrison duty in Utah till muster out.”
This moderately sized box is made of pine and is milk painted a natural white color, allowing the grain pattern of the wood to show through. Ribbed joints tightly secure each panel of the box and a sliding tongue/lip and groove box lid hosts the hand-painted text “Lt. C. Harriott / 2nd Cav. C.V. / Camp Union”. A series of penciled numbers are also discernable on the lid to the upper left of the painted text. The underside is unpainted and a small area of wood loss is noted along the upper edge. Expected wear is observable throughout in the form of scratching, minor localized dents, and localized (mild) paint loss - understated history of the item’s use as intended. The unfinished interior is in nice condition with comparably minimal wear. Dimensions are 8.5” x 15.5” x 25.5”.
A very scarce and interesting piece from the Civil War’s far Western Theater, with ties to multiple battles, the Indian Wars, and historic sites. An excellent piece that would display very nicely. [cm][ph:L]
