This a white metal identification disk, showing a portrait bust of George Washington with the words “GEORGE WASHINGTON / BORN FEBRUARY 22, 1732” around the outer edge.
Like all Civil War identification disks, this was privately purchased and stamped on the reverse with its owner’s name, unit identification, and home town. The revers is stamped in an arc along the top edge: “HERMAN C. MILLER.” Below that in three parallel straight lines is “Co. H. / 52 REG. / P.V.” Below this in along the bottom edge is “ARCHBALD”.
The disk shows wear overall with small dings and scratches.
Herman C. Miller was from Luzerne County, PA. He was a 23-year-old carpenter when he enlisted on 11/4/1861 as a Private in Company "H" of the 52nd Pennsylvania Infantry. Promoted to Corporal on 11/5/1864. He was Mustered Out on 11/5/1864.
The 52nd PA fought in the Battles of Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Second Battle of Fort Wagner, and the Carolinas Campaign. [jet][ph:L]
