Green textured cloth cover; gold imprint on spine. 4.5” x 6.5”, 548 pages plus advertisements. Tip-outs and line art scattered throughout. Condition is generally good considering this was lost on the battlefield and was later picked up. Minor wear to corners and edges of cover with some light water staining to paper. Just the kind of wear you want to see on a tactics book carried by a soldier.

Written in brown ink on first inside page, “Henry Baulton / Independence / MO / Curtis(?) army / October 1864 / Drill ye terriers / drill. / rotten food.” In brown ink on the next page is written, “This book was picked up near Westport after battle by Miss Emma Curtin of Lawrence Kan. Whom was visiting in that vicinity Oct. 28, 1864. / Miss Emma Curtin / Lawrence, Kan.”

Henry Baulton (spelled Bolton in records) was from Mound City, KS. He enlisted on 9/1/1861 as a Corporal into Company “H” of the 7th Kansas Cavalry. He re-enlisted on 1/1/1864. On 9/29/1865, when the rest of the regiment was mustered-out of service, he was Court Martialed and busted down to Private. Unfortunately no other information was uncovered about what had to be an interesting event on that date.

The 7th Kansas, under command of Lieutenant Colonel F. M. Malone, took an active part in the campaign in Missouri against the rebel General Price, during the fall of 1864, and participated in all the principal engagements. At Independence, Mo., the regiment charged against a superior force of the enemy, and succeeded in completely routing them and captured two pieces of artillery. The regiment mustered out at Fort Leavenworth, Sept. 29, 1865, having served a term of 3 years and 11 months, during which it marched, exclusive of distance traveled on transports and by rail, 12,050 miles. The regiment lost by death during service 3 officers and 61 enlisted men killed in action or mortally wounded; 1 officer and 97 enlisted men died by disease and other causes. [jet] [ph:L]
