Offered here is an antique Whittington travel chess set with engraved plaque on the lid to “Major Edwd. Howard. / Washington, D.C.”
This portable Chess Set measures 8″ x 4″ x 4″ when folded up and closed. The case is Mahogany with Rosewood and Sycamore squares. The Whittington chessmen are pegged representations of the headpieces of each of the six chessmen and are fabricated from natural and red-stained bone. The Whittington style portable chess sets were available in several sizes, all having bone chessmen. The Whittington Pattern chess sets were produced by several manufacturers, including the British Chess Company.
The idea behind the design is to allow a game in progress to be discontinued and the position on the board retained for future play by using two hinged flaps which fold down over the chessboard, preventing the pegged chessmen from moving when the board is inverted. The hinged halves can then be closed and locked in place via hooks on the sides, leaving a small box to easily pack away. This type of traveling chess board starts to appear in the 1850s and remains popular into the early twentieth century.
This travel chess set is in excellent condition. All game pieces remain present. From usage, the holes in the board have expanded, and when folded and inverted some of the smaller pieces do not remain in place. The outer box is fine with very little show of wear and the interior veneer is excellent with no loss or chipping. Unfortunately, “Major Edward Howard” is not enough information to track down the specific history of this item. [jet] [ph:L]
