This small-sized testament was published and printed by the American Bible Association in 1860. It is remarkable in that the first flyleaf features the inscription “Company K / 20th Regiment / Mass. Volunteers / Officers Tent”. Written in period ink, the inscription shows expected oxidation and remains perfectly clean and legible.
The boards are heavy paper stock, covered in black-finished cloth. The front board is separated but present, while the folding closing tab section is missing. Wear is noted along the edges and corners of the covering materials and boards. Gilt text remains vibrant on spine. All pages are in excellent condition, with no staining or discoloration – save for earmarked pages 425-428 (the end of the Book of James and the beginning of Peter). Gilt pages edges remain bright, with light shelf and handling wear along sections of the top and bottom (but no material loss). Dimensions are 1”x 3” x 4.5”.
With its ties to one of the most famous and hard-fought regiments in the Army of the Potomac (fifth- highest casualty rate overall) and obvious signs of use, this book is an exciting and exceedingly rare piece for the Civil War collector. [cm] [ph:L]
