Offered here is a very fine hand-carved pipe bowl with complete soldier identification. Likely carved from a chunk of burl wood, this piece was made to use a detachable pipe stem. You couldn’t ask for a better patina on this, with an old blackened background overall, and with the fine aged wood tone showing through where raised areas have been rubbed.

The top edges of the bowl and stem base feature a raised ring surrounding each opening. The soldier’s name is carved into both sides of the stem base; “Jacob” of the left side and “Kent” on the right side. The bowl itself features a very fine and detailed spread-winged eagle on the front. Behind the eagle on the left side is a large “F” (representing Company F) and the curled French horn (insignia of the infantry) is on the right side. Wrapping around the lower portion of the bowl there is a ribbon clutched in the eagle’s talons with “121 NYV” and “US” carved into it. Under that, on the underside of the bowl is a raised cross, symbol of the 6th Army Corps.

Jacob Kent was a 43-year-old farmer from Herkimer, NY when he enlisted on July 21, 1862 as a Private in Company “F” of the 121st NY Infantry. He was discharged for disability on 1/19/1864. He died in 1889 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Herkimer, NY.

The 121st New York Infantry regiment, commonly known as the "Onesers" or "Upton's Regulars", was recruited from Otsego and Herkimer Counties, New York. They arrived at Antietam the day after the battle but were engaged at Fredericksburg, 2nd Fredericksburg (Salem Church), Gettysburg, Bristoe, Rappahannock Station, and Mine Run while Private Kent was still present in the regiment.

A fantastic example of a hand-carved Civil War soldier’s item. [jet] [ph:L]
