This volume has light wear to the covers, namely bent corners. Book measures 3.5” x 5.5” with 279 pages plus advertising. Green cloth covers with faded gold printing on the spine. Numerous tip-out diagrams are present.

Brigham Capt” is on inside front cover with a similar ink note on the facing page, but that page is torn. Inside the back cover is written, “Presented to Lt. E. Weller by H.G. Brigham Capt Co. H 107th N.Y.V.”

Edwin Weller was born on April 9, 1839. He was 22 years old when he enlisted as a Private into Company H, 107th NY Infantry on July 25, 1862. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on September 14, 1863. He fought at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and in the Atlanta campaign, among other engagements. He survived and was mustered out of service on June 5, 1865. A sixth generation New Yorker, he lived most of his life in Montour Falls, formerly known as "Havana", NY. As a young man he clerked in a dry goods store he later came to own, and in time became one of the village's leading merchants. During the Civil War, his correspondence with a local young woman, Antoinette "Nettie" Watkins, blossomed into romance. The couple were married on November 15, 1865. He was also active in the G.A.R. veterans' organization. Mr. Weller died "of paralysis" march 31, 1908, at age 69 and is buried in Montour Cemetery. His Civil War letters to Nettie were published in 1980: "A Civil War Courtship", by Doubleday.

Captain Henry Gustavus Brigham was born on September 13, 1836, in Ontario, Canada. He was 26 years old when he enlisted and was commissioned 1st Lieutenant of Company G, 107th NY Infantry. Promoted to Captain of Company H on May 24, 1863. He survived and was mustered out of service on June 5, 1865. He died on May 25, 1907 at Daytona Beach, FL and is buried in Marietta National Cemetery in Georgia. [jet]  [ph:L]
