A Civil War soldier’s pocket edition of the New Testament published by the American Bible Society in New York in 1862 showing wear and age, with the covers in place but the spine missing. This has an old, brown ink presentation inside both covers: “Presented by the Chaplain of the 46th Ills Inft at Mobile alabama” inside the front cover and the same information without the location inside the back cover. On the flyleaf of the front cover is a pencil inscription by the owner that is difficult to make out, but likely represents something close to what he wrote in ink on the flyleaf at the back of the book: “Jasper N. Murry / Co. H 8th / Regt. Ills / Ill Inft” (the state abbreviation being repeated.)
CWData indicates Lists him as enlisting and mustering in as a substitute on Co. H 8th Illinois Infantry on 10/8/64 and mustering out 6/19/65. During his service with the regiment they were in the Army and Department of the Gulf, were posted at Memphis and New Orleans, and took part in the attack on Mobile, fighting at Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely, and later being the first to enter the city. The Illinois veteran index lists him as wounded at Blakely, AL, April 9, 1865, so it is possible he received the bible while hospitalized at Mobile. He seems to have had prior service in the 7th Missouri Cavalry, mustering in 8/30/1862 and serving to discharge 11/16/63. The regiment had been organized in early 1862 and was active in Missouri and Arkansas, losing 4 officers and 55 men killed or mortally wounded. Murry is sometimes also listed as member of the 1st Missouria Cavalry, but that may be a matter of bookkeeping in the regiment since when the regiment was mustered out veterans and new recruits were consolidated with the 1st Missouri and existing records were then likely updated or redesignated to some degree.
With the bible is a small oval photo of an older man in civilian clothes mounted on a CDV size card, inscribed in brown ink at bottom: “Chas. W. De Wolf formerly 1st Lieut. Co. E 7th Cav. Mo Vols Born Feb 2(0?), 1834” and with a pencil notation on reverse: “Grandpa’s Commanding officer.” DeWolf had enlisted 11/1/1861 at age 27 and was commissioned 1st Lieutenant of Co. E 7th MO Cavalry, and served until discharge 3/12/1864. He lived in Kansas after the war, as did Murry.
This was carried by a soldier with some interesting western service and has room for more research to flesh out his story. [sr] [ph:L]
