Louis G. A. Fauteux was a 19-year-ol upholsterer when he enlisted and mustered into Company D of the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry on February 26, 1864.  He served through the remainder of the war in the famous 2nd – a unit known for having a battalion of Californians in its ranks (not Louis’s company) – and mustered out on July 20, 1865 at Fairfax Court House, Virginia.  At some point, Louis was promoted up the ranks to a junior officer, though the official rank and further details remain unclear.  He was a member of Massachusetts Grand Army of the Republic Post #113 and served as the post Vice-Commander in 1894 and remained active until his death in 1899.

His escutcheon is commercially printed and hand finished with service details, battle honors, and a portrait photograph of Louis at low center. The frame is original to the piece with a front face trimmed in a muted metallic gold.  The original wood backing is missing a small section and is separated in another (but remains secure and display-ready).  Dimensions are 18” x 23.75”.

A striking war service memorial for the collector of Civil War Veteran items.  [cm][ph:L]
