Irwin's Patent Camp Mess Chest was a popular, specialized, and portable container used by officers during the American Civil War for storing and transporting cooking and dining utensils. Advertised in the 1860s, these chests allowed officers to maintain organized camp dining, often featuring compact designs.
Irwin's chest was listed alongside other high-quality military camp equipment, including cots, tents, and field desks, marketed by supplier Warne, Cheever and Company of St. Louis. It was offered in 5 sizes, ranging in price from $25 for sizes 4 and 5, $30 for size 3, and $40 for size 2, and $60 for size 1. The chests were supplied with utensils and dining ware, as well as a folding table that measured 5.5’ long, 2.8’ wide, and “of the ordinary height” – none of which are present. This example measures 31.5” x 18.5”, with a height of 20.5” – the customized dimensions falling between sizes 1 and 2 of the standard commercial offerings. The chest is paired with a stand, initially included as a standard item with the purchase of a Size 1 chest. The stand measures 26.5” in height, with the top measuring 15” x 17” when unfolded and locked in place by a pivoting, notched steel strap and stud. Both pieces show a faux grain finish with a gold hue. All original brackets, nails, screws, hinges, rivets, handles, and clasp are present and secure, with slight play in the stand where the legs join at the center. The interior of the chest is lined with period plain paper and period newspaper, brittle from age and the transfer of acid from the wood. The commercial/retail stamp on the underside of the lid reads “WARNE, CHEEVER & CO. / 125 North 4th St. / ST. LOUIS / MANUFACTURERS / IRWIN’S PATENT / DEC. 17th 1861”.
An interesting and innovative survivor of camp life – ideal for the collector of personal or commercial period offerings.
