A small round paper mache snuff box with a hand-painted female vignette on the lid (possibly religious themed). Some losses to the black lacquer finish on the edges. The hand painted image is scuffed and is missing a few larger sections. It measures 2 ¾” round and stands ¾” tall. It is unmarked except, a faint stamped imprint inside the cover of a “star” over “HP”.
The item is from the former “Old Stone House Museum Collection” in Windsor, NY. It comes with a typed tag reading “CIVIL WAR VINTAGE SNUFF BOX OF RUFUS TOMPKINS, 144th NEW YORK VOLUNTEERS, WALTON, N.Y.”. Tompkins mustered in on 9/27/1862 with company E. He was dishonorably discharged on 2/11/1863 at Alexandria, VA.
The box could pre-date the civil war with that style being in use as early the late 18th century. Tompkin’s grandfather, Daniel Tompkins, was the 1812 governor of NY. [stp][ph:L]
