This 1852 copy of George McClellan’s Manual for Bayonet Exercise was printed by order of the War Department in Philadelphia by Lippincott.  Condition is quite good, with minimal wear to the cloth cover, original commercial advertising, tight binding, and very clean pages. Dimensions are 5” x 7.6”. A small pasted tag and embossment on the flyleaf denote the book as being formerly of the Old Stone House Museum in Windsor, New York.

The flyleaf is inscribed with a layered note reading “Orderly Sgt. Currier /Co. G. 40th Rgt. / Mass. Vol” and “With Respects of / 1st Lt. Horatio Jenkins / Co. G 40th M. Vols” written just below.  The inked inscription has oxidized to a deep brown color and remains entirely legible.

The recipient, Sergeant Charles Currier, lived in Chelsea when he enlisted at age 28 on 8/9/1862.  He made it all the way to Captain and suffered a wound on 6/16/1865 at Petersburg.  He mustered out on 6/16/1865 at Richmond and was an active member and Post Commander of Post #35 in Chelsea.  Horatio Jenkins Jr. was 23-year-old law student when he enlisted as a Private on 4/19/1861 and mustered into Company I of the 5th Massachusetts.  He mustered our on 7/31/1861 and on 9/5/1862 he was commissioned into Company G of the 40th Massachusetts.  He served with the 40th until early 1865, enduring captivity as a POW after the Battle of Drewry’s Bluff.  Confined to Macon, GA and then transferred to Columbia, SC, he staged a daring escape and rejoined his regiment some time in late 1864 or early 1865.  He was discharged on 2/18/1865 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was commissioned into the 4th Massachusetts Cavalry at the same rank on 3/12/1865.  While with the 4th, he was wounded on 4/6/1865 at High Bridge, Virginia but survived and received a promotion to Colonel on 4/23/1865.

A rare title and a very neat link to two men of the 40th Massachusetts.  A prime piece for the collector of fine Civil War books and identified items.  [cm][ph:L]
