This book, a copy of the 1858 regulations for the Militia of the State of New York. It features a marbled cover with leather binding on the corners and spine. Much use is noted, but the integrity of the book is strong. The first 5 leaves after the 2nd flyleaf are loose but present. Pages 99-106 are also loose but present. Minimal foxing and discoloration are observed across the first few pages, with the rest in good condition.
The interior cover is signed in period ink “Property of Company D Infantry / Canaseragas” just above the New York State Property insert. The Canaseragas Light Infantry was organized in 1847 and disbanded at the outset of the Civil War, with a sizable portion of its former members entering state volunteer service for the conflict. Of the men from the greater Dansville area who volunteered, 46 were killed in action over the next 4 years. Dimensions are 5” x 7.6”.
A scarce antebellum military title with an excellent link to the fighting men from New York. [cm][ph:L]
