William Steinmeyer lived in Milwaukee when he enlisted on 8/15/1862 as a Sergeant.  On the same day, he mustered into Company B of the 26th Wisconsin Infantry. He served through the war, mustering out on 6/13/1865, but not before suffering a wound as a 2nd Lieutenant on July 1 at Gettysburg and another as a Captain of Company “E” at Peachtree Creek in July of 1864.

The book is covered in azure blue cloth with gilt text on the spine.  Moderate cover wear and evidence of extensive use are noted.  William inscribed the book first on the flyleaf with his name, 2nd Lieutenant rank, and the date March 15th, 1863.  He followed that with two further inscriptions mirroring the first, one with his rank of 1st Lieutenant of Company F and the date of September 8th, 1863; and the final (written in pencil) is dated June 1st 1864 with his Captain rank listed. All pages are complete with mild, scattered discoloration and slight pulling from William’s repeated use. Published in 1862 by authority of the War Department by George W. Childs of Philadelphia with a stamp at low right of the title page reading “Milwaukee County Historical Society”. Dimensions are 6” x 8.5”.

An interesting, identified book with dated field provenance.  Ideal for the collector of fine Civil War books and personalized items.   [cm][ph:L]
