Offered is a complete set of Casey’s Infantry Tactics, dated 1862. Each volume is complete and in good condition with appropriate wear given their previous ownership and purpose. Green cloth covers on Volumes 1 and 3 show little wear, while Volume 2 shows a bit more corner and edge wear at the spine. The bindings remain tight, with some loosening of Volume 3’s cover. The third volume’s inside cover also bears the bold signature “M P Bestow / Capt & AAG” (Acting Adjutant General) in period, lightly oxidized ink. Cover dimensions of each measure 3.6” x 5.4”.
Marcus Bestow enlisted on 7/31/1861 as a 26-year-old 2nd Lieutenant. On that same day, he was commissioned into Company A of the 26th Infantry Ohio. He was discharged for promotion on 12/23/1862 and commissioned into the US Volunteers Adjutant General Department. He was Mustered Out on 9/1/1866. During his service, he was promoted 5 times to 1st Lieutenant on 6/23/1862, Captain - 12/23/1862 (Captain & Asst Adjutant General), Major - 3/13/1865 by Brevet, Lt. Colonel - 3/13/1865 by Brevet, and Colonel - 3/13/1865 by Brevet. His promotion from Lieutenant Colonel to Colonel was in response to bravery exhibited during the Battle of Nashville.
