Offered here is a scarce, original first edition of History of the 51st Regiment of P.V. and V.V. (Pennsylvania Volunteers and Veteran Volunteers). Authored by Captain Thomas H. Parker (Commander of Company I), this volume was published in 1869 by King & Baird, Printers in Philadelphia.

This highly desirable copy features a unique historical connection, distinctly stamped on the flyleaf as a gift from regimental drummer William Hansell of Company I of the 51st Pennsylvania. Association copies linked directly to enlisted musicians from this storied unit are very rarely encountered.

This volume is housed in its original green cloth hardcover with gilt-stamped lettering across the spine. The volume exhibits honest wear and age. There is a horizontal tear at the spine cover, along with wear to the edges of the cloth cover at both the spine and corners. Despite these external condition flaws, the binding remains secure, and the text block is complete. The interior pages show typical, mild age-toning but remain remarkably clean, free from major foxing, and completely legible throughout.

The 51st Pennsylvania Infantry was organized at Camp Curtin in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in November 1861 under the command of Colonel John F. Hartranft. Serving valiantly as part of the famous Ninth Army Corps, the regiment participated in some of the bloodiest engagements of the war. Parker provides unparalleled, first-hand tactical descriptions of the unit's actions, most notably their legendary charge to storm and capture "Burnside's Bridge" at the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. The narrative also heavily details their vital combat roles at Roanoke Island, Second Bull Run, South Mountain, Fredericksburg, Vicksburg, Knoxville, the Wilderness, and Spottsylvania, concluding with their muster-out at Alexandria, Virginia, on July 27, 1865. An incredibly tough-to-find, premier piece of Pennsylvania Civil War history with a fantastic, documented link to a regimental musician.
