This exceptionally rare link to the nation’s founding was initially acquired by Dr. Robley Dunglison.  Doctor Dunglison was Jefferson’s personal physician and the attending physician at the time of his death. The strands included in this display were part of a larger lock of hair that descended through the Dunglison family until being held by Charles Ferry Fisher.  In 1929, Fisher, then librarian of the Philadelphia College of Physicians, executed a sworn affidavit attesting to the lineage of the lock.  Most of Robley’s original lock was donated to the Philadelphia College of Physicians, while the family kept some and famed philographic expert Charles Hamilton acquired the rest.

The display measures 8” x 10” and includes a magnified mount for viewing.  The mount is housed by several cut layers of acid-free foam core mounting board, finished in a varied green suede. A portrait of Jefferson is mounted at top, while a description of the pieces is mounted at bottom.  A copy of the 1929 affidavit is shown and included, along with a letter of authenticity from the most-recent owner and curator of a section of the original lock.

The Charles Fisher ‘Jefferson Strands’ have been recognized as an authentic standard in Jefferson collecting, making this an endlessly important item for the early American collector.   [cm][ph:L]
